It will take a village to organize your mind

The mind is one of the most incomprehensible things that make us human. It’s full of snippets of the past and imaginations about the future.

The mind creates a distorted reality of imaginative events that never happened or will never happen. It is replaying conversations of how you wish they happened. It forms movie scripts of the future that will almost never occur.

Your mind is like a movie that is played with a gaussian blur on top of it. And you’re trying to script, edit and make a directors cut without being able to see the images of reality. This is what creates an incredible level of anxiety for us.

Some of us, are perfectly poised to figure out complex matters inside their heads. They don’t need to converse with others to crystallize their thoughts. However, if you are like the most of us, you fair best with talking to other people, so you can understand yourself better. Even if you’re fortunate enough to figure out your thoughts inside your head, the outside perspective that a great listener can give to you, will be able to provide an unparalleled insight, you couldn’t articulate inside your own head.

Great listeners are so powerful because they don’t sit there to give you advice. They sit there to listen. To probe. To question. To understand. Their facial expressions are the feedback loop that steers the narrative of your thoughts and stories. A great listener does this (consciously or subconsciously) for a reason… they listen so you can organize your mind. That is what makes you feel so good, so relieved, not because they are „nice“, but because they just helped to organize your mind.

Speaking is an essential tool to organize your own thoughts. The better the listener, the more you’ll speak. The more you speak, the closer you’ll get to the hidden clues of understanding.

With a great listener, you don’t speak to convince them. With a great listener, you speak to better understand the maze inside your mind. You speak to forget the unnecessary details, that were blocking new neural pathways inside your head. And you can only get rid of them with an individual who listens.

Most of the times it will take a village to organize your mind. Some of the times, it just takes one great listener.
