The Future of Media

A question that has been continuously asked throughout recent times is how the media will evolve and change as new technological innovations come into the limelight. There’s no debate that print journalism is on the decline in terms of national prominence, but what types of outlets and means will become the new standard of media?

There are obvious candidates to observe here. Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have changed the landscape of journalism dramatically. Even television news seems like an ancient artifact, with more and more people turning to these social media giants for their daily dose of news. This is the current state of media distribution in the United States, but the goal of this piece is not to analyze the current state of media, but to identify what the future will be ten or twenty years down the line.

Research from a small group study has identified two potential breakout methods for media distribution. One of them can be easily predicted based on the current social climate, while the other required a bit more of an in depth look at what is happening behind the scenes.

Another method of media distribution that is perhaps a few more years away is the concept of augmented reality. This new concept can alter reality to the point where it still is the real world, but there are slight changes to the environment. Google Glass is an example of this type of reality. While there have not been significant media applications made to this concept yet, one can only imagine the possibilities and potential of this newfound technology.

The media landscape is constantly evolving. It would be unwise to only look in the present and not examine the future to see what the world of journalism has in store.
