I suppose eating 15 different foods every day (or 17 if you’re counting the photo) sounds like a lot to manage. Truthfully — and especially if you’re not accustomed to eating this way — it is. The…
States have done something that few would have ever thought possible: develop school and district report cards that people who don’t have a Ph.D. in statistics can understand.
We launched the Chiefs for Change Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Workgroup in February 2016 with 15 states committed to developing plans in partnership with communities — parents, families, local agencies, faith leaders, the business community — that would put kids first and reflect the needs of each state. Our workgroup members spent much of 2016 focused on real listening and stakeholder engagement to understand what communities cared most about for their kids’ education and on developing the best indicators of student success that could be used on school and district report cards, given the flexibility that ESSA allows.
The finder feature of the system allows families to search for schools or centers by location, letter grade, or curricular and extracurricular offerings. Once a family has selected a school they are interested in, or entered in the name of their current school, the system displays a comprehensive report card to help them discern whether the school is providing their child with the best educational experience. The report card — developed with significant feedback throughout the process from educators, families, and business and community leaders — provides information on student performance, the strength of the school’s workforce, and the quality of the school environment.
Louisiana also designed a reporting system that provides additional layers of detail on each school for principals and district leaders so they can better understand how to continue to be high-performers or improve as needed. We’re proud to have assisted them in developing this broad set of resources, and will be supporting other state members with their report card redesign efforts over the next several months. As states submitted their ESSA plans this year, our workgroup progressed from a peer-to-peer learning model to more individualized supports for plan implementation and action. Our members learn quickly from one another, spreading great ideas fast and far.
It’s a critical moment for states to empower parents with tools and information so they can make the decisions that matter most for their kids.
