Out of the Harbor and Into International Waters

Home to one of the Western world’s first modern stock markets, the Netherlands boasts a long tradition of entrepreneurial capitalism and technological innovation. CD-ROMs (R.I.P), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can all trace part of their beginnings to the industrious tinkering of Dutch inventors and companies. Today, the country has fostered successful companies such as Booking.com and emerging startups like Adyen.

In just a few weeks we’ll release a short report looking specifically at StartupDelta-Amsterdam and its strengths and gaps as a startup ecosystem. Here, we will preview some of the findings from that report.

Our research places StartupDelta-Amsterdam in theExpansion phase on our Ecosystem Lifecycle Model (see below).

Finding and securing experienced talent is one of the key stepping stones in Amsterdam’s growth track
In 2015, the Netherlands launched a startup visa program to attract foreign founders from outside the European Union. However, our findings indicate that more startup employees than founders head to the StartupDelta-Amsterdam region. If the rate of exits and subsequent startups being founded is to increase, a higher number of risk-taking founders are needed.
