Different Perspectives in the Wage Gap

Many people believe that the wage gap is a huge issue in the United States today. As looking at this article by Arrah Nielsen it challenges my thinking in many ways believing that the wage gap does not really exist and that it’s really a choice made by women. It goes in depth about the history of the wage gap and how it has not truly effected women but has been proven that the wage gap is just a blown out of proportion and made seem that it is unequal, when really it is not. In many ways it has been showed that women choose not as hard of majors when going into college, choosing to take time off in the domestic load at home and not taking the risk of an unpleasant job that could earn them more money.

The author brings many persuading arguments that show that the wage gap does not exist. Women tend to choose not as rigorous majors in college that make less money such as liberal arts. This gives them a chance to work in the education field and social working jobs. This has been proven to not make more money than jobs such as in the sciences that take much longer education time. Women doing this are making less money because of it, which is not from discrimination of the pay wage but just real studies shown in the wage gap. It makes a big differences if you are working 40 hours a week being a social worker than it is someone working 70 hours a week being a doctor. A statistic shows from Nielsen explains “When males and females in the same occupation, with similar qualifications and experience, are compared there is virtually no difference in their pay. A definitive study of the gender wage gap conducted by economist June O’Neill, former director of the Congressional Budget Office, found that women earn 98 percent of what men do when controlled for experience, education, and number of years on the job.” As this statistic shows women do get paid equally when they have the same experience as men in the work place. As Americans we tend to forget that the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination in the workforce and also giving women equal pay rights.

Women have been known to choose to take a less work load than men to be able to tend to their family. This is not because they have to but want too. After many surveys asking women if they want to take off more time for their children they almost always say yes. This is not because they have to but are willing to. With this being said women usually also sacrifice taking more time off because the men in the relationship are making more money because of the career they had chosen. Not only do they choose to lessen their work load to take care of the children at home but in a study in Neilson article explains “20 percent do not work at all, having opted out of the workforce in favor of being stay-at-home moms. A Korn/Ferry study revealed that only 14 percent of women, compared to 46 percent of men, say they actually want to be a CEO.” As seeing in this statistic you can see that women do not have the drive as much as men to succeed at the highest level paying jobs. Women are willing and want to take off time from work to be able to be with their children. Now knowing this it gives a greater perspective on how the wage gap works. If women really wanted to they could not choose to do this and give themselves a better career path that makes more money and can give them a better paid job.

From this article I have personally found a lot that the author was able to persuade me that the wage gap is not something that is as big of an issue after all. If women want to not risk what they want to do in their career then it is not mens fault for that. The wage gap has many point that come from all angles but this gave me a better understanding of what really the wage gap is. Neilson gave great back up information with good studies that made me re-think what really is the wage gap.
