Designated Survivor

How Noah essentially became the last man standing and restarted humanity

Good morning!

I started watching a new show recently called Designated Survivor, a political drama about a doomsday scenario wherein just about all of the highest ranking political officers lose their lives in a tragic act of terrorism.

To avoid total and utterly hopeless chaos, apparently, the U.S. Government has created an initiative to have a Designated Survivor, a person who sits out at any meetings where all high-level officials are gathered in one place (such as the State of the Union address); in the case of an absolute national emergency, if enough people in the line of succession all die simultaneously, the Designated Survivor takes over and becomes president immediately (which, having never before heard about this, is actually super cool).

After sitting down to write this morning, I thought about how Noah essentially was the designated survivor of the old world. He wasn’t a king, and, judging by the fact that only his kids joined him on the ark, I think it’s safe to say that he was not necessarily the person the rest of humanity would’ve chosen for the job of continuing the species.

And yet, for one reason or another, God deemed Noah worthy of being the last man standing, the one who would take charge and lead the human race into its future. He wasn’t elected, and he may not have even been liked very much—seriously, you’d think at least one non-family member would’ve joined him on the ark, but no—but he was, without doubt, the designated survivor.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’d be pretty uncomfortable going from my limited sets of roles and responsibilities to all of a sudden becoming president—or, you know, the sole leader and renewer of the entire human race—but it’s very cool to think about how the people put into those situations can and do sometimes own up to their positions and do whatever it takes to become great leaders.

So, how about you? Have you ever been put into a position of leadership that you’ve felt like was way above your paygrade? I’d love to hear about it.

In any case, have a great day today, and happy 4th of July! God bless.
