Why Ohio State vs Michigan is the Best Rivalry

One if not the best rivalry in college sports today is Ohio State vs Michigan. No matter what sport they play each other in, it always has so much at stake. The best known match up between these two is college football. This game received the nickname “THE GAME” and for a good reason. This game typically determines who will win the BIG ten and in recent history, who will make the college football playoffs. The first time Ohio State and Michigan played each other was all the way back in 1897. The rivalry has been played annually since 1918 besides a few exceptions. Michigan currently leads the series 58 to 50 but Ohio State has a win streak of 7 starting back in 2012. Michigan leads the series but since 2001, the rivalry has been pretty one sided favoring the Buckeyes. Ohio State has a record of 14–2 against Michigan since 2001. Even though the rivalry has been pretty one sided in recent history, the games are nearly always close no matter the records between the two teams. The most notable game between these two is back in 2006 when number 1 Ohio State hosted number 2 Michigan. This game determined who would play for the BCS championship. Ohio State ended up winning the game 42–39 holding off a Michigan comeback rally. Another notable game was in 2016 when number 2 Ohio State hosted number 3 Michigan. Ohio State ended rallying back to win in double overtime after a controversial 4th down spot was called which lead to a 20 yard run for the win the very next play. This was also the first time the two went into overtime against each other. The only rivalry that is relatively close to “THE GAME” is the “IRON BOWL”. The “IRON BOWL” is a match up between the Alabama Crimson Tide vs the Auburn War Eagles.

No matter what sport these two play each other in, it’s almost always a battle. Both Ohio State and Michigan are well known for multiple sports such as basketball, wrestling, baseball, and any other sport you can think of. Whenever they play each other, you can count on drama and a battle. “THE GAME” can make a break a season. One team can have a terrible season but as long as they beat the other team in “THE GAME”, it’s considered a good season to some.
