Injecting Reality into the Roe v. Wade Debate

There’s a lot of hype on both sides, here are some facts to consider

Before the ink dried on the Supreme Court decision about Roe v. Wade, the hype machines on both sides were already churning out their responses.

I was a journalist for 30 years, and I shake my head at the horrible job of reporting done nationally. I have yet to see any news report telling us what the thinking of the Supreme Court was. What were their reasons? Unless you go to the Supreme Court website and read the actual decision, you have no way of knowing. Our national media had failed gloriously to do the very basics of journalism.

It is hard to find any news story that is “fair and balanced.” It is easy to spot. How they use terms like pro-life, pro-choice, and anti-choice, are dead giveaways.

The Supreme Court did not ban anything. They turned it back to the states, and now many states are passing limits. No state has banned abortion but some have passed restrictions.

Here are some interesting statistics from the Center for Disease Control, CDC. Nationwide 43 percent of abortions are performed at six weeks or less. A full 96 percent are performed before 16 weeks. In Texas then, 96 percent of abortions would be allowed. There are also exceptions, so it is factual to say only fewer than four percent of abortions have been banned in Texas or nationwide.

The health of the mother is an obvious exception that almost everyone supports, but even that is rare. According to the CDC, there is less than two-tenths of one percent chance that birth will harm the health of the mother. 17.4 out of 100,000 births…
