Antithetical Rhetoric In America

Ravyne Hawke issued a challenge to pick five different writers each week, read an article by each, and comment on it. It has been eye-opening. I often spend more time reading than I planned. Yet…

The Tech Incubator

Deep in the hidden mists by the Student Union lies one of QC’s most well-hidden secrets: The QC Tech Incubator. But what is this tech incubator? Who resides there and what is it for?

Well, simply put, it is an accumulation of companies, students and faculty with one purpose in mind: to make the world a better place. From basic raspberry pie projects to cybersecurity classes to startup companies the tech incubator has become a driven engine for Queens College both promoting some of the college’s best students and becoming the foundation for productivity and community work, alike.

But let’s take a more in-depth look into some of the tech incubators projects:

Sample project 1: students are helping a local paleo food vendor migrate their online store from Squarespace to Shopify.

Sample project 2: students are developing a native iOS application that provides aspiring entrepreneurs in the fashion and makeup industry to take advantage of all the resources available to them via a digital directory.

Classes: during Spring Break the Tech Incubator will be offering a variety of classes for middle school students from raspberry pi and sonic pi programming to robotics, all taught by our talented studnets. These are part of the “Coding for the Future”classes to be offered in the summer camp. Students are also providing the community with a premium course on iOS app development and a course on sound and audio engineering.

A handful of teams are developing WordPress and Wix sites for various departments within the college. These teams are largely to help students come out and explore experiences working with a group rather than by themselves.

More and more students are taking a leadership role:

Ricardo Guerra is not only leading the Sonic Pi team, he is also leading a developer team to rebuild a website for an incubator company using WordPress.

Muhammad Raza, another talented student, who has been running a web developer group and giving classes on Fridays, and has been facilitating a Python user group called Pythonista on Wednesdays.

Luis Medina continues to run the HackQC user group and explore game programming using Unity and 3D modeling.

Last, but most certainly not least we have Project Manger Kashfi Fahim, who is managing multiple projects and running the iOS user group on Sunday nights.

As always, the tech incubator team is working hard on planning many more events and activities from guest speakers to hackathons! We have grown and expanded so much over these last 18 months and we will continue to shoot for the stars!
