You Own It!

Why do we own what we own? Why is it our property? The English philosopher John Locke proclaimed that “everyman has a property in his person; this nobody has a right to but himself. The labour of his body and the work of his hand, we may say, are properly his”.

Yes. That is correct. The labour of our body and the works of our hands are our property. But in this world we live now, we own lots of things that are not the labour of our body or the works of our hands.

In fact, property ownership evolved into a different and more recently, an abstract one. What we call property changed from just labour, into expertise, from expertise to time, from time to money and from money to passion.

When you are a hardworking and smart man, it is gonna be only sometime till you turn out to be an expert. And given your determination and brilliance, you would be a sought after authority that everyone looks up to.

It also happens that you will have a lot of money to invest and get folds back in return. It doesn’t stop here. Your passion is going to lead you to somewhere you have never imagined. Passion will start to serve you as your universal currency reserve.

Mark Cuban, the entertainment and sports mogul, in one article he wrote, says, “don’t follow your passion, follow your effort.” He must be pointing out the fact that hard work and commitment are an invaluable source of success.

But to say passion is not important and in fact leads to failure is very wrong. Yes, effort is important. And whether you own something you have put your labour or expertise or time or money or passion, that is your effort in it. Passion definitely is the highest form of property you might own.

Evolved forms of properties have the others as their subsets. Passion has all the others as its subsets. By putting your labour at something or using your expertise to do something, you work for money. If you invest your money and time, your money works for you. And if you have a passion for the things you love and dream to make the world a better place doing them, that is what you earned and it is something you need to keep and cultivate.
