One Unexpected Consequence Of Personal Storytelling

I don’t understand why elderly people share horrific stories of their past with their grandchildren. Actually, my fear of wind is connected to one of my grandmother’s stories.

When I told her that wind made me anxious, she explained that in her village wind was a sign of incoming danger: during windy nights people would lose their minds and every morning a man would be found hanging from a tree.

She said that the suicide rates increased during windy seasons.

I have never considered suicide, but the idea of finding a man hanging from a tree is excruciatingly unpleasant. Knowing that a person is in emotional pain makes me deeply empathize with them.

Her story made me become more understanding of people who suffer, yet is making me more anxious now that climate changes add more windy days!
